So he's got Irish blood.... got a typical Irish blokes barnet.... got an Irish name ... played already for Ireland.... but in with a chance for playing for England... I think i'm with Stewie on this one

Who hasn’t done something silly when they were 18?
Most of these events however don’t involve someone issuing a programme with your name in it

Norman 12:17 Fri Jan 18
Re: Declan Rice: England or Ireland
Eddie B what bit is that? Is Declan Rice not an Irish name? His Dad identifies as Irish as both his Parents are Irish. Been reported in loads of articles. By descent his half Irish half English. He has 3 caps for Ireland. I have never heard of someone called Declan who hasn’t had Irish blood. You seem to be getting all confused about Saints

Eerie Descent 12:01 Fri Jan 18
Re: Declan Rice: England or Ireland
Ireland systematically seek these young lads out and entice them with International football, and because there is such a huge doubt for all of them about making it as a pro at that age, it obviously seems like a good career choice at the time, with them being 15 and not understanding the future implications.

That is the biggest problem here, and you're seeing it play out when English kids turn into men, are potentially good enough to play for England, and naturally would rather do that. The FAI they should not be doing it, and you can't all complain when these lads suddenly have a change of heart.

If he hadn't made the mistake of already playing for them, there wouldn't be a choice to make.

The fact he has a decision to make makes me think he isn't sure about Ireland

Re: Declan Rice: England or Ireland
Maybe like many London born people he's actually proud of his Irish roots and has grown up surrounded by Irish culture and cheering for the Rep of Ireland football team. Maybe he's grown up listening to that heritage being ridiculed and abused by ignorant pricks who think anti-Irish abuse is somehow funny and more acceptable than other forms of racial abuse eg. this thread and pretty much any mention of Irishness on this site for the past ten years. Constantly hearing shite about terrorism, potatoes and probably having his name mocked by know nothing tools could well be a decisive factor in deciding to play for Ireland.

If he does, see how quickly the anti-Irish abuse surfaces here as soon as he makes a mistake in a West Ham jersey.

Re: Declan Rice: England or Ireland
In reality he is Irish. Just that back in the days of illiteracy the person doing the writing for one of his paternal ancestors put the "O" in his surname at the end instead of the beginning thus turning O'Cascarin into Cascarino.

Norman 10:53 Thu Jan 17
Re: Declan Rice: England or Ireland
Yes Cascarino thought his Grandfather was Irish. Well he was but his Mum was adopted so didn’t have any Irish blood. He didn’t know his Mum was adopted until he was in his twenties I think and had been capped. You didn’t need a Passport back then.. He still qualified though and later got a Passport. His Dad was Italian

Norman 10:47 Thu Jan 17
Re: Declan Rice: England or Ireland
Both his Dad parents are Irish and you have to have an Irish Passport to play for Ireland. Not saying his not English as well but 50% of your heritage is a bit more than tenuous. Maybe he should of played for England but to change after 3 caps is disgusting. Making a mockery of International Football. Patrick isn’t an Irish name is it. It used all over the world. I would say Declan is.

Re: Declan Rice: England or Ireland
Wasn't it the Millwall clogger Tony Cascarino who played 88 times for Eire without having a shred of 'Irish blood' running through his veins?

Norman 8:09 Thu Jan 17

ONE grandparent is Irish - that is not half of his family. Why does he obviously have an Irish passport?

Pub Bigot 7:58 Thu Jan 17

Not to mention how exciting it must be to be called up.

It’s got to be Ireland I’m afraid, he has already played and kissed the badge

Eddie B 8:34 Thu Jan 17
Re: Declan Rice: England or Ireland
Has an Irish name? WTF are you on about?

So Patrick Stewart is Irish
Patrick Swayze was Irish
Pat Cash?
Patrick Kluivert?
Patrick Moore?

So all Andrews are Scottish and all Georges are English?
